The Nitria Desert is located at a distance of 100 km from Alexandria and is named after the nearby village where saltpeter is mined.This is the place where monasticism was born. Nowadays only 4 ancient monasteries have survived in the Nitria Desert, which date back to the 4th century AD and are still active. They are located just off the Alexandria-Cairo road.
